In a landmark moment for Gunjur’s sports community, Lamin Bada Bojang has been elected as the new President of the Gunjur Sports Committee (GSC), ushering in a youthful and dynamic team to steer the affairs of sports in the town.

At the elective congress held on Sunday, 20th July 2025, Bojang secured a resounding victory over outgoing president Dembo F. Touray, winning 20 of the 24 delegate votes. Touray, who has served at the helm for the past four years, polled 3 votes, while one ballot was declared invalid.
The results reflect a clear desire among stakeholders for fresh energy and renewed focus on sports development in the bustling coastal town.
Competing visions: Continuity vs Change
During the campaign, the two candidates laid out contrasting visions for the future of sports in Gunjur.
Touray, a veteran sports administrator, campaigned on the theme of “Progressive continuity”, pointing to the many milestones achieved under his tenure. These include the construction of the Nyamina Mini Football Grounds, the introduction of new sporting disciplines, and Gunjur’s representation in the Gambia Football Federation’s second division league.

“I have demonstrated through action what it means to develop sports in Gunjur,” Touray said in his campaign pitch. “We have laid strong foundations, and I ask for your trust to take it to even greater heights.”

On the other hand, Bojang promised “a new era of sports development” rooted in principles of transparency, accountability, inclusivity, effective communication, a proper Nawettan calendar, capacity building, and athlete marketing.

“Our sports need a fresh approach,” Bojang declared before the vote. “Together, we can unlock the potential of every athlete and make Gunjur a beacon of sports excellence in The Gambia.”
Touray bows out gracefully
Following the election, Dembo F. Touray issued a gracious concession statement, thanking stakeholders for their support over the years and pledging to assist the new executive during the transition period.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for the opportunity to serve our community for the past four years. I’m humbled by the trust you’ve placed in me, and I’m grateful for the experience,” Touray said.
“Although the recent election didn’t go in my favor, I want to thank you for your support and engagement throughout my tenure. To the president-elect and the new executive, please be assured of a swift transition from my end. I’ll continue to support and contribute to the growth and success of our sports whenever required. I salute you all.”

His message was widely praised by stakeholders as a show of sportsmanship and maturity.
Bojang calls for unity and action
In his victory statement, Lamin Bada Bojang thanked delegates for their confidence and emphasised the importance of unity moving forward.
“Thank you all for trusting me to lead the affairs of sports for the next four years in this our beloved community. I am not oblivious about the weight of this responsibility but shall do all it takes to ensure I fulfill the trust you’ve reposed in me,” Bojang said.
“To my predecessor, thank you for setting the standards very well for us. Now is the time to put aside our differences and work together for a better Gunjur. Our goal is clear: to make Gunjur the sports juggernaut of The Gambia - and together this is possible.”

What’s next?
As Bojang and his team prepare to take office, expectations are high. Their first tasks are likely to include organising a smooth Nawettan season, improving communication with affiliated teams, and building on the infrastructural and administrative gains made under Touray’s tenure.
“This is not just a win for Lamin; it’s a win for the youth and the future of Gunjur sports,” one delegate told Gunjur Online. “Now the real work begins to turn these big promises into reality.”
For now, Gunjur’s sporting community looks ahead with optimism as it enters a new chapter under youthful leadership.
