Gunjur, The Gambia – 24th July 2025
The Gunjur Ward Development Committee (WDC), in collaboration with the Brikama Area Council, has successfully completed a major fencing project at the Holland Women Community Garden. The initiative, aimed at restoring security to the garden and enhancing women’s horticultural activities, marks a significant milestone in community development and women’s empowerment within the Gunjur Ward.

The fencing project, which spanned a 900-meter perimeter, was completed over a three-week period by local contractor Mr. Sarjo N. K. Darboe. A total of 45 bundles of wire were used to enclose the garden, effectively preventing animal intrusions and enhancing the safety of the over 150 women who rely on the space for their livelihood.
“This project is a direct investment in the economic empowerment of rural women,” said Hon. Momodou Charreh Gibba, Chairperson of the Gunjur WDC. “We are proud to support the hardworking women of Holland Garden who continue to play a critical role in food production and local economic sustainability.”
The project was funded through a combined effort: Gunjur WDC contributed GMD 450,000 while the local community provided a counterpart contribution of GMD 40,000, bringing the total cost to GMD 490,000.
Positive Impacts Already Visible
Since the completion of the fence, activities in the garden have resumed at full scale. Women are now growing vegetables and fruits without the constant threat of crop damage from stray animals. The result has been a noticeable boost in food production, improved income for gardeners, and enhanced food security in the area.
“The fence has given us peace of mind. We can now focus on our crops and increase our harvest,” said Awa Sanyang, one of the garden beneficiaries.
Community Involvement and Sustainability
The project has not only improved the physical infrastructure of the garden but also strengthened community involvement and ownership. Members of the community actively participated through financial contributions and project monitoring.

Minor delays were experienced due to rainy weather, but the project remained on track and was completed within the expected timeframe.
A Step Forward for Gunjur
The successful completion of the Holland Garden fencing project reflects the power of local collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals. It also serves as a testament to what can be accomplished when community, local authorities, and development partners work together.
The Gunjur WDC extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Brikama Area Council for their generous support and applauds the women of Holland Garden for their resilience, dedication, and commitment to community progress.
