During the project prioritisation exercise, the Borehole Water Project for the Shengha community was ranked first, followed by the Holland Garden fencing.

Work on the borehole began last week and is expected to be completed within the coming days. Both projects are financed from the One Million Dalasis Ward Development Allocation disbursed by the Brikama Area Council under the leadership of Chairman Yankuba Darboe. Each project has been budgeted at D450,000, reflecting the WDC’s commitment to equitable resource distribution across the ward.

In a move designed to promote youth empowerment and economic development, both contracts have been awarded to young entrepreneurs from within the community.

Speaking to Gunjur Online, Gunjur Ward Councillor Hon. Momodou Charreh Gibba underscored the significance of the projects:

“Both projects are part of women empowerment and livelihood enhancement programs. Community gardens provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs, reducing dependence on external food sources. They offer a local, affordable, and nutritious food supply, especially where markets or transport links are poor.”

“Access to fresh produce helps reduce malnutrition and diet-related illnesses like stunting, anemia, or vitamin deficiencies. Surplus produce can also be sold locally, creating income for families and small cooperatives.”

He also highlighted the critical health benefits of the Borehole Water Project:

“Clean drinking water is essential to prevent waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid. It supports better hygiene, especially among children, pregnant women, and the elderly.”

“Access to potable water dramatically reduces illness and child mortality rates in rural communities. This borehole will be a lifesaver for many households.”

The WDC extended its gratitude to the Brikama Area Council and all stakeholders for their continued support. As work progresses, the community is encouraged to lend its cooperation to ensure the successful and timely completion of these projects.
