Kombo South Youth MP, Hon. Omar A. Manjang, is attending a two-day Dialogue on Missing Migrants currently underway at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre (SDKJICC).

The dialogue brings together key stakeholders under the Rabat Process Region, a consortium of networks on missing migrants from 28 countries across Africa and Europe. The meeting is being held under the theme “Bridging the Gaps: Advancing Cooperation on Missing Migrants in the Rabat Process Region”.

The phenomenon of missing migrants is a complex and deeply human crisis requiring urgent and coordinated action at national, regional, and international levels. The dialogue has attracted participants from diverse sectors, including National Focal Points, the European Union (EU), African Union (AU), ECOWAS, humanitarian organisations, government institutions, civil society organisations, local networks, and families of missing migrants from affected communities.

Discussions are focused on:

Preventing loss of life along migratory routes;
Strengthening efforts to find, identify and trace missing migrants;
Protecting the rights of missing persons;
Supporting bereaved families and affected communities;
Promoting data sharing and cross-border cooperation.

Hon. Omar A. Manjang’s participation underscores the growing concerns in Gunjur and the wider Kombo South community, which has been deeply affected by the tragic loss of many young lives to irregular migration. “This is an opportunity for us to network, share the plight of families and our community, and seek support in tracing our missing loved ones,” Hon. Manjang noted.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitated Kombo South’s participation to ensure local voices are heard in shaping policies and concrete actions around migration and missing persons.

This engagement marks a crucial step towards addressing the humanitarian, social and policy challenges posed by irregular migration and the tragedy of missing migrants.
