The Gambia-born prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, has vowed to appeal against the acquittal of former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo on charges of crimes against humanity.

Mr Gbagbo who is currently in Belgium was conditionally released after 7 years in custody and could have returned to Ivory Coast had the prosecutor decided against appealing.

Ms Bensouda blamed what she called legal and procedural errors in the original court process, which led to the acquittal of Mr Gbagbo who was the first head of state to stand trial in The Hague.
