Nairobi, Kenya – May 28, 2025:
Gunjur Ward Councillor Hon. Momodou Charreh Gibba, alongside Hon. Jainaba Jobe and Fasaikou Janneh from The Gambia’s Department of Planning and Development, is attending a major international gathering organised by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya.
The five-day event, running from May 26 to May 30, 2025, brings together leaders, policymakers, urban planners, and experts from across the globe to explore solutions for sustainable urban development.

UN-Habitat, the UN’s lead agency on urbanisation, is mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities and communities. The agency plays a vital role in tackling urban challenges through policy development, technical assistance, advocacy, and strategic partnerships.
The Gambian delegation’s presence underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable development goals and inclusive urban growth. During the summit, delegates are engaging in high-level discussions and workshops aimed at shaping the future of cities around key themes such as housing, infrastructure, climate resilience, urban equity, and governance.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Hon. Gibba highlighted the importance of international collaboration:
“Urbanisation is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Participating in this global platform allows us to learn from others, share our experiences, and strengthen our national policies to ensure our cities and communities are safe, inclusive, and resilient.”
UN-Habitat operates in over 90 countries, promoting change through its four-pronged approach:
Think – advancing research and standards for urban sustainability
Do – providing technical and crisis support
Share – advocating for transformative policy
Partner – collaborating with diverse global stakeholders
The Nairobi summit forms part of the agency’s continued effort to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.
