London, 24 July 2025 – Her Excellency Dr Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner of The Gambia to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, has been elected as the new Chair of the Executive Council of the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), according to the Gambian mission in London.
CABI is a global, inter-governmental organisation focused on improving lives through practical solutions in agriculture and the environment. With a strong emphasis on science and sustainable development, it supports farmers and communities in addressing issues like crop pests, food insecurity, and environmental degradation.

Dr Bensouda’s appointment marks another historic milestone for a Gambian public figure on the international stage. Best known for her role as Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC) from 2012 to 2021, she was the first woman and first African to hold that position. Prior to her international service, she held top legal roles in The Gambia, including Attorney General and Minister of Justice.
In her current role as High Commissioner, Dr Bensouda represents The Gambia in the UK, Ireland, and the Commonwealth. Her leadership at CABI is expected to bring renewed focus on the needs of African nations and developing countries in global agricultural discussions.
CABI also extended its gratitude to the outgoing Chair, His Excellency Dhanpaul Narine of Trinidad and Tobago, who has recently been appointed as his country’s Minister of Finance.
Two new Observers were also welcomed to CABI’s Board:
• Mr Dmitry Robertson, Counsellor for Political and Economic Affairs at the Jamaican High Commission
• Dr Sadik Kassim, Deputy Director General at Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO)
During the meeting, the Council approved CABI’s 2025 operational budget and endorsed its financial strategy through 2027.
This latest honour for Dr Bensouda is a proud moment for The Gambia, reaffirming the country’s growing reputation for producing leaders of international stature.
